Global Partnership on Marine Litter
REGIONAL NODES
To promote the development and implementation of the Global Partnership on Marine Litter on a regional basis.
The Mediterranean became the first region to adopt an Action Plan (MAP) in 1975, just after the creation of the Regional Seas Programme in 1974, and was revised in 1995. Although the MAP’s initial focus was on marine pollution control, it gradually widened from a sectoral approach to pollution control, to integrated coastal zone planning and management as the key tool through which solutions are being sought.
Northwest Pacific Regional Node of the Global Partnership on Marine Litter was established with the support of the Global Programme of Action for the Protection of the Marine Environment from Land-based Activities (GPA), the Northwest Pacific Environmrntal Cooperation Center (NPEC) and the Regional Coordinating Unit of the Northwest Pacific Action Plan (NOWPAP).
SPREP is the regional organization established by the Governments and Administrations of the Pacific charged with protecting and managing the environment and natural resources of the Pacific.
The South Asian Seas Action Plan (SASAP) was adopted in March 1995. The South Asia Cooperative Environment Programme (SACEP) is acting as the Action Plan secretariat. South Asian Seas Action Plan (SASAP) focuses on Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM), oil-spill contingency planning, human resource development and the environmental effects of land-based activities.
UN Environment established the Caribbean Environment Programme (CEP) in 1981 as one of its Regional Seas Programmes in recognition of the importance and value of the Wider Caribbean Region’s fragile and vulnerable coastal and marine ecosystems including endemic plants and animals.
