CASSINI Maritime Prize for Digital Space Applications
The 7th International Marine DebrisConference (7IMDC) took place from the 18th to the 23rd of September 2022 in Busan, Republic of Korea.
The 7IMDC built on the momentum of past IMDCs by bringing together governments, industry, academia, civil society, and all relevant stakeholders, to discuss the latest science, strengthen collaborations, find solutions and catalyze action to address the urgent, global problem of marine litter and plastic pollution.
THE GPML DIGITAL PLATFORM
Through the Clean Seas platform, UNEP is connecting and rallying individuals, civil society groups, industry and governments for catalyzing change and transforming habits, practices, standards and policies around the globe to dramatically reduce marine litter and its negative impacts.
Since its launch in 2017, the campaign has become a catalyst for change, transforming habits, practices, standards and policies around the globe. To date, 63 countries have joined, making the Clean Seas Campaign the biggest, most powerful global coalition devoted to ending marine plastic pollution.

SEA of Solutions is going virtual again this year.
Together with the Ministry of Environment and Water of Malaysia, SEA of Solutions 2021 will take place on 16-18 November 2021.
This year’s theme calls upon plastic value chain stakeholders to unite in “Accelerating solutions to reduce plastic waste” by exploring policies, partnerships, innovative technologies and financing that help address present challenges and mitigate the potential impacts of future disruptive global events.

The Watamu Marine Association has developed a business model that brings together local communities and the tourism industry to collect, repurpose and recycle plastic waste. This small-scale circular economy has big potential and can be replicated anywhere in the world there is a coastal tourism industry, restoring coastlines and addressing the global issue of marine litter.

The Ocean Visions 2021 Summit, “Towards a Global Ecosystem for Ocean Solutions” will bring together a multi-sector community of researchers, innovators, decision-makers, funders, and more to develop roadmaps for solving great ocean challenges including ocean-based solutions to climate, equitable coastal solutions strategies for resilience and adaptation, marine circular economies, ocean & human health, and how to transform research from academia into sustainable businesses.
Hosted by the UNEP MGCY Marine Litter and Microplastic Working group, in collaboration with the GPML, our team dives into the topic of marine litter monitoring and the GPML Digital Platform.

Launch of the Nordic Report “Strengthening the Global Science and Knowledge Base to Reduce (Marine) Plastic Pollution”
As part of their efforts to support the global policy discussions on a new global agreement to combat plastic pollution, the Nordic Council of Environment and Climate Ministers commissioned a report, to explore how to strengthen the science and knowledge base and to ensure evidence based policy-making.
The first of our 2021 GPML Webinar Series was hosted by our Northwest Pacific (NOWPAP) Regional Node and looked at ‘Addressing Marine Litter in the Northwest Pacific Region’. The GPML also provided an update on the proof of concept for the GPML Digital Platform Data Hub and next steps for Phase II.
